If there's one thing every local business should do for their online presence, it's claiming and optimizing their Google Business Profile. It's free, it's powerful, and it directly affects whether customers find you in local search results.
Step 1: Claim or Create Your Profile
Head to business.google.com and sign in with a Google account. Search for your business name. If it already exists, claim it. If not, create a new listing.
You'll need to verify ownership, usually through a postcard mailed to your business address, a phone call, or email verification.
Step 2: Fill Out Every Single Field
Google rewards completeness. Fill in everything:
- Business name — Use your real business name. Don't stuff keywords in here. - Category — Choose the most accurate primary category. You can add secondary categories too. - Address and service area — If you serve customers at your location, add the address. If you go to them, define your service area. - Phone number and website — Make sure these match what's on your website. - Hours of operation — Keep these current, including holiday hours.
Step 3: Write a Strong Business Description
You get 750 characters. Use them to clearly explain what you do, who you serve, and what makes you different. Include your city or service area naturally.
Step 4: Add High-Quality Photos
Businesses with photos get significantly more clicks and direction requests. Add photos of your storefront, team, products, and completed work. Aim for at least 10 quality images.
Step 5: Collect and Respond to Reviews
Reviews are a major ranking factor. Ask satisfied customers to leave reviews, and respond to every single one — positive or negative. It signals to Google and to potential customers that you're active and engaged.
Step 6: Post Regular Updates
Google Business Profile has a "Posts" feature that lets you share updates, offers, and events. Use it regularly. It keeps your profile fresh and gives customers another reason to choose you.
Step 7: Monitor Your Insights
Check your profile's insights regularly to see how customers are finding you, what actions they take, and which photos perform best. Use this data to improve your listing over time.
